The Independent Certified Gemologist^® Appraiser (ICGA) title has been transitioned to the Advanced Certified Gemologist Appraiser™ (ACGA) credential. ICGA titleholders are eligible to transition to ACGA in recognition of their longstanding commitment to AGS and the significant accomplishment of earning the ICGA title.

The Advanced Certified Gemologist Appraiserâ„¢ (ACGA) credential is intended for a member who regularly completes appraisals as part of an established AGS business with an Accredited Gem Lab^® (´¡³Ò³¢). The Credentialed Employee is well-versed in appraisal procedures and valuation, and has established experience completing appraisals as part of the gemstone and jewelry industry.

The credential holder has successfully completed the requirements for the RJ, CG, and CGA credentials, maintained the CGA credential while employed at an AGS business for a minimum of three years, and has successfully completed the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP^®) 15-hour personal property course. The ACGA combines the science of gemological testing and identification with the experienced research capabilities of a skilled valuation specialist.

Please be sure you meet the following credential requirements before applying for the ACGA credential.

The ACGA credential applicant must:

• Have actively maintained the AGS Certified Gemologist Appraiser (CGA) credential while employed at an AGS business for a minimum of three years
• Maintain an Accredited Gem Lab^® (´¡³Ò³¢)

  • If you are employed at a business with an AGL, please be sure it meets the most recent requirements. Click here to view the requirements. (AGLs confirmed more than 10 years ago may need to resubmit evidence of compliance with the most recent requirements.)
  • AGLs will be required to complete an annual audit with a recertification fee.
• Have completed the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP^®) 15-hour course
  • Proof of completion, as well as completion of recommended update courses (if needed based on time since initial completion), is required

Applicants who receive the ACGA credential must do the following to maintain the credential:

• Successfully pass the annual AGS recertification exam and pay applicable fees
• Successfully complete the USPAP^® refresher course as recommended by The Appraisal Foundation (TAF)
• Submit a current appraisal report for review by the Appraisal Standards Subcommittee upon request
